Government Took Her Home—But She Fought Back and Won!

Case of Geraldine Tyler

The Power of the People is Stronger than the People in Power

Tyler v. Hennepin County, 598 U.S. 631 (2023)

Background:

  •  In 1999, Geraldine Tyler purchased a condominium in North Minneapolis.
  • By 2015, she had accumulated approximately $15,000 in unpaid property taxes, including penalties and interest.
  • Hennepin County foreclosed on her property and sold it for $40,000, retaining the surplus $25,000 beyond her tax debt.

Tyler v. Hennepin County, 598 U.S. 631 (2023)

   Legal Proceedings:

  • Tyler filed a lawsuit against Hennepin County, arguing that keeping the surplus proceeds violated the Fifth Amendment's
  • Takings Clause, which prohibits the government from taking private property for public use without just compensation.
  • Lower courts dismissed her claim, but the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear her case.

Supreme Court Decision:

On May 25, 2023, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of Tyler, stating that retaining the surplus proceeds constituted a violation of the Takings Clause. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote, “The taxpayer must render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, but no more.

Taxed out series spotlight - Lou

Lou can’t afford to stay in his home.

His wife is battling cancer—and he is actually told,  “Just move her.”

This is the reality too many of our neighbors face. It's why we’re fighting to end property tax —because no one should be forced out of their home.

Senate Bill 76 Targets Landlords & Renters:  Proposes a "housing market impact tax" targeting landlords who own 50 or more single-family, two-family, or three-family dwellings within a single county. The bill aims to address housing market dynamics by imposing a monthly tax of $1,500 per qualifying property owned on the first day of each month. Primary Sponsors: Senate Democratic Leader Nickie J. Antonio (D-Lakewood)

Louis W. Blessing, III (R-Colerain Township).

The revenue generated from this tax would be directed into the newly established Housing Market Impact Tax Revenue Fund. After accounting for any necessary refunds, the fund's balance would be allocated as follows:

  • 50% to the Low- and Moderate-Income Housing Trust Fund, which is utilized by the Department of Development to support housing construction and renovation grants for nonprofit organizations and housing agencies, as well as related services and homelessness programs.

  • 50% to the Local Government Fund, through which the state shares revenue with counties, cities, villages, townships, and other local government units, including park districts.

Kids in Crisis

Kids in Portage County, Ohio, and beyond face a growing mental health crisis, with rising anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. Social media fuels this issue through cyberbullying, unrealistic expectations, and online predators. Sextortion is especially dangerous, as predators manipulate teens into sharing explicit images, leading to fear, shame, and, in some cases, suicide.

We parter with the SOAR PROJECT in bringing awareness and giving kids the toolbox needed to navigate life. Contact us to learn more about this curriculum or our presentations.

Amendment Status Update

🚨 BIG UPDATE on the Property Tax Ballot Initiative 🚨 The initiative to END Property Taxes in Ohio will NOT appear on the upcoming 2026 primary ballot.

Instead, it is aimed for the November 2026 General Election ballot. 👉 All required petition signatures must be submitted to the Ohio Attorney General no later than July 1, 2026.

This will be a major ballot issue in a Governor’s race year—and notably, no candidate currently running has embraced the platform to end property tax. In fact, Vivek has stated publicly that his plan is only to “cap property taxes”—not end them.  This preserves the system while pretending to fix it. Ohio families deserve more than half-measures. They deserve the security of knowing their home is truly theirs. Real change can only happen when YOU—the people—make your voices heard.

This is a long game—and we’re playing to win. If you’d like to help us gather signatures in Portage County or beyond, please email us at portageprojectpromise@gmail.com.
